Sigiriya

Sigiriya

Sigiriya or Sinhagiri is an ancient rock fortress located north of the Matale Region near the town of Dambulla in the Central Province, Sri Lanka. The name refers to a place of historical significance and archeology controlled by a large stone column nearly 200 feet high. According to the ancient Sri Lankan history Culavamsa, the site was chosen by King Kasyapa for his new capital. He built his palace on the rock and adorned its sides with colorful carvings. On a small plateau almost in the center of the rock he built a huge lion-like gate. The name of the place is derived from this building — Sīhāgiri, Lion Rock. The capital and royal palace were abandoned after the king's death. It was used as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century. Sigiriya is known as the 8th woman in the world.
